A group of community organisations have come together and launched the EmpowerWA project to start a conversation on what a clean energy future will look like for Western Australia.

EmpowerWA represents the voices of West Australian churches, unions, conservationists, and social service providers and is supported by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

Conservation Council WA (CCWA) Director Piers Verstegen said, “by being proactive in our support and development of clean energy, WA can ensure a bright economic future, beyond the mining boom, and make a genuine contribution towards a cleaner future”.

Mr Verstegen said Western Australians know that mining booms don’t last forever. “That’s why we need to work hard now, to create new industries and jobs for the future. With a price on carbon starting in July, there is no better time to have a conversation about the opportunity that this economic change can bring, and what the carbon price means to Western Australians in their homes,” he said.

EmpowerWA will be running a range of events across Western Australia over the coming months, including a competition for the best story showing that WA is leading the country in community action on climate change. For more information on the competition visit the EmpowerWA website.
